Mobility Award

The European Mobility Week Award wants to reward local authorities’ activities in the framework of the European Mobility Week 2009. The Award aims to promote experiences and successes in organising the Week and to raise awareness for the need of local and individual action in the field of sustainable urban mobility. The finalists of the 2008 Award – Budapest (winner), Zagreb and Almada - were celebrated at a prestigious ceremony in Brussels and highlighted in EMW publications. The winner of the EMW Award 2009 will also be awarded with a free video to promote its achievements as a champion of sustainable urban transport in Europe.


Eligibility Criteria

Local authorities are eligible to enter the European Mobility Week Award scheme if they:

  1. register their activities online at www.mobilityweek.eu,
  2. fulfil the three “golden” criteria of the European Mobility Week Charter (organise a week of activities, implement at least one new permanent measure, organise the “In Town Without My Car!” event),
  3. are situated in the EU-27, EU candidate countries, potential EU candidate countries that are part of Stabilisation & Association Process (SAP), European Economic Area countries (EEA) or European Free Trade Area countries (EFTA). These countries are (40 altogether): Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo under UNSCR 1244, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Evaluation Criteria

Important evaluation criteria for the independent expert jury are:

  1. the quality of activities taking up the focal theme of European Mobility Week 2009: “Improving City Climates”,
  2. the comprehensiveness of the action plan regarding events, individual activities and involvement of citizens,
  3. the strategic approach in communicating and promoting the Week towards the citizens and the media,
  4. the innovativeness of the permanent measure(s) implemented on the occasion of the Week, regarding its/their public awareness-raising impact and its/their effectiveness in terms of sustainable mobility,
  5. the quality and scope of the partnerships with local stakeholders for organising the European Mobility Week.

Application Procedure

Local authorities wishing to apply for the European Mobility Week Award 2009 are invited to:

  1. complete the application form in English (maximum 20 pages), providing details about the local authority, EMW events and activities, alternative transport modes and implemented permanent measures and nature and contributions from local partners,
  2. e-mail the application form together with a digital copy of the signed charter before 1 November 2009 to peter.staelens eurocities eu,
  3. supporting materials - communication aids and tools, press clippings and CD-ROMs and DVDs with videos and images (preferably in high resolution) – can be sent by normal post and should arrive at the address below before 15 November:

Awarding Ceremony And Prize

The awarding ceremony will be organised in Brussels in February 2010 in the presence of the European Commissioner for Environment. The winning local authority will be awarded with a free promotional video (up to 3 minutes clip in English and in the native language) to highlight its achievements as a champion of sustainable urban transport in Europe.
